Embark on an extraordinary adventure with award winning photographer and filmmaker Geoff Heith, alongside Captain Peter Dick, as you immerse yourself in one of nature’s most awe-inspiring spectacles. Each spring, the pristine waters of British Columbia’s west coast transform into a mesmerizing turquoise hue, brought to life by the milt of the tiny yet mighty herring.

This annual event triggers a feeding frenzy, drawing a diverse array of wildlife to the shores of Comox, Denman Island and Hornby Island—from orcas, seals, and sea lions, to bears, eagles, and countless seabirds. As the waters bloom with life, the surrounding environment becomes a vibrant tapestry of nature’s raw beauty—a dream come true for photographers, filmmakers, and nature enthusiasts alike. Join us on this once-in-a-lifetime journey to capture the heart of nature’s grandeur.

WHERE IS IT?

The tour will start each day from the Comox Marina bright and early on the SS Funship and tour around the waters of Comox, Hornby Island Denman Island and the Straight of Georgia.

WHAT ARE WE DOING?

As a guest you have the option for joining for 1, 2 or all 3 days. Each day will offer a unique and different experience depending on what is happening out on the water. One day we may hear of orcas in the bay, the next day a spawn maybe popping off on the south side of Denman Island. Each day will bring a new fresh adventure which is the beauty of this event. The goal of each day is to witness, learn and document this amazing event.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

This is a photo and video tour geared towards creatives who want capture the herring spawn and west coast marine life and scenery for themselves. However, you don’t have to be a photographer or film maker to come! We want this to be an opportunity to see the herring spawn up close and personal, heck Peter will even let you catch a herring or two if you’re lucky!

It’s for any skill level of photographer or film maker, no experience required. If you’re just about seeing the beauty of the even please come along and bring some binoculars with ya!

WHAT’S INCLUDED?

This is a guided trip on the SS Funship with teaching and learning from Geoff Heith and guiding and learning about the spawn from Captain Peter Dick. We will include snacks, non alcoholic drinks and a light lunch provided by West Coast Kitchen each day.

The first rule of coming to the Island is BE PREPARED!

Geoff Heith is an award-winning cinematographer and photographer, renowned for his ability to capture the essence of human stories through narrative-driven film and imagery. With over 15 years of global travel, Geoff has worked with tourism and outdoor brands, telling compelling stories that inspire and connect. A true adventurer at heart, Geoff enjoys fishing, woodworking, and cherishing time with his wife and four children. His work has taken him to some of the most breathtaking corners of the world, where he continuously seeks to showcase the beauty and power of the natural world.

Captain Peter Dick, known as "The Fish" since his childhood, is a true Vancouver Island native with an unparalleled passion for the water. With over 12 years of professional experience and 12,000 sea hours, Peter is a seasoned captain who has navigated the waters from Sooke to Haida Gwaii. His deep knowledge of the ocean and his love for sharing it with others have made him a trusted guide on countless expeditions. Whether teaching water sports or leading immersive ocean experiences, Peter’s expertise and infectious enthusiasm make every adventure unforgettable. AVAILABILITY / COST / INFO

The trip is based on a maximum of 6 people per day. To get the best bang for your buck we recommend booking for 3 days as you get a discount for doing so and have the most likelihood of seeing ALL the things. The herring spawn is never a guaranteed event in regards to timing and we cannot guarantee that the spawn will happen on the selected weekend, however we will do our best to make sure each day is filled with opportunities to see wildlife and the stunning scenery around the Straight of Georgia.

*Not included is your travel to and around Comox and accommodations in Comox. Breakfast and Dinner are not provided, however if we all want to coordinate getting together for dinner we can most certainly do that.
